Impressive displays in the Robin Morrish String Competition
The annual Robin Morrish Strings Competition, established over 20 years ago in honour of Robin Morrish, former Head of Strings at Tonbridge and teacher of violin and viola, continues to inspire and encourage young string players in the Lower School.
This year, ten talented pupils from the Novi and Second Year took part, performing on violin or cello. Their repertoire showcased an impressive range, from classical works by Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary pieces by Barbara Arens and Pamela Wedgwood.
The School was delighted to welcome Mark Kennedy, Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral School, as this year’s adjudicator, giving each entrant detailed feedback, to help them to become more confident in their performing. Mark is also known for his extensive outreach work promoting music education for children of all backgrounds, as well as his leadership of various choirs and ensembles across London and the Southeast, Mark brought great insight to the judging process.
Following a series of impressive performances, Enoch (HS2) was named the winner for his elegant interpretation of Beethoven’s Romance No. 2 in F Major. Yanning (PS1) and Miles (MH2) were also highly commended for their well-executed performances.
The competition once again highlighted a range of musical talent among Tonbridge’s younger students, whilst honouring the legacy of Robin Morrish.
