The pre-season Basque Country Rugby Tour
Despite the School being closed over the summer holidays, there are still a breadth of opportunities to choose from, including a variety of international trips, where boys can pursue their passions and enhance their skills out of term time. One of which is the annual Basque Country Rugby Tour, where keen players can prepare for the season ahead, participating in a intense fitness programme prepared by Head of Athletic Development, Mathew Cowley.

The team travelled to Bayonne to train at the unique Stade Belascain, a sunken 5G pitch surrounded by stands and built into a fortress, providing the perfect grounds to train ahead of the upcoming season.
When taking a break from training, the team had the opportunity to explore San Sebastián, whilst some ventured up to La Mota Castle, others relaxed in local cafés, enjoying a much-needed break from the physical demands of training.
Preparations intensified on day four for the match against St Jean de Luz Rugby Club. After a light session and a carb-heavy buffet on day five, where some ignored Mathew Cowley’s advice and overindulged, the team faced a physical French side in challenging weather. Tonbridge’s determination and skill saw them prevail, showing strong defence and fast attacking play.
The following morning, players recovered with a surf lesson at Chambre D’Amour beach, offering a welcome distraction from GCSE results. Celebrations followed, along with an evening trip to the thrilling Bayonne vs Biarritz derby.
Just when the tour seemed complete, Director of Rugby, Rhys Crane, surprised the group with one final beach fitness session featuring wrestling drills, hill bear crawls, and Malcolms, pushing the team to their limits.
The tour was a resounding success, building team spirit, match readiness, and lasting memories ahead of the new season.
