Sixth Formers thrive at Model UN conference at Benenden

A group of Sixth Formers attended their first Model United Nations conference at Benenden this week, where they demonstrated impressive growth in public speaking, critical thinking, and negotiation skills.

Director of Global Futures, Ruth Davis, praised the students’ efforts, saying:

The boys were a credit to the School and did very well, competing against a selection of schools with significant experience, but our boys held their own.

Throughout the conference, students represented Djibouti and Ecuador across a wide range of committees, including the Office on Drugs and Crime, Disarmament and International Security, Environment, Arab League, Special Political and Decolonisation, the Economic and Social Council, and Human Rights.

The event offered an immersive introduction to global issues, international relations, and diplomatic practice, challenging participants to debate from the perspective of the nations they represented.

In the final results, Peter (PS4) was awarded Best Delegate in the Economic and Social Council for his representation of Djibouti, while Mathew (FH4) received Highly Commended Delegate in the Arab League, also representing Djibouti.

Reflecting on the experience, Ruth Davis added:

Students spent the trip back to School discussing the next conference, and I have no doubt they will go from strength to strength.
