A day in the life of a school science technician: Tonbridge marks Techognition
Tonbridge is once again proud to support Techognition, the UK-wide initiative that celebrates the vital work of science technicians in schools and colleges. First launched in 2018, Techognition highlights the often unseen but essential role technicians play in supporting science education, preparing equipment, maintaining laboratories, and ensuring experiments can be carried out safely and effectively.
To mark this year’s Techognition, the Science Technical Team created a short film titled “A day in the life of a school science technician.” The video offers a behind-the-scenes look at the wide range of tasks technicians carry out throughout the day, from preparing practical experiments and maintaining specialist equipment to supporting teachers and ensuring laboratories remain safe and well-organised learning environments.
As well as highlighting the variety and pace of the role, the film includes each member of the team speaking about what they enjoy most about being a science technician. Their reflections demonstrate the collaborative nature of the role, the satisfaction of helping bring science lessons to life, and the pride they take in supporting both teachers and pupils.
Lisa Alford, Science Coordinator, said: “science technicians play a crucial role in enabling practical science to happen every day. Their knowledge, organisation and dedication ensure that lessons run smoothly and safely, allowing teachers and pupils to focus on exploring and discovering science. Techognition is a wonderful opportunity to recognise the incredible work they do behind the scenes.”
Techognition provides an opportunity to recognise the professionalism and commitment of technical staff across the country, and Tonbridge is delighted to celebrate and thank its Science Technical Team for the invaluable contribution they make to the life of the School.
