Symphony Orchestra, featuring Symphony No.3 Organ, Saint-Saëns
The Lent Term Symphony Orchestra Concert featured both our Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mark Forkgen, Director of Music, alongside the recently refurbished Marcussen organ, played by Laurence Long, Organist and Accompanist in Residence.
The programme opened with Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Op. 62, performed with gripping intensity, setting the scene before the main work of the evening, Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78, known as the “Organ” Symphony. This mighty work, influenced by his mentor, Liszt, provided the perfect canvas to celebrate both our magnificent organ, contrasting its subtle shades and tremendous power, and our Symphony Orchestra, playing with great sensitivity and élan.
