School record first wicket partnership seals victory
Tonbridge’s 1st XI produced an outstanding all-round performance to defeat Eton at the weekend.
A composed opening stand laid the platform for a dominant innings, with Rob (JH5) finishing unbeaten on 156 and George (SH4) adding 131 in a school-record first wicket partnership of 282.

Tonbridge closed on an imposing 313-2 from 55 overs. Eton responded steadily, but disciplined bowling in the middle overs from Shabd (SH2) (5-29) and Alex (FH5) applied sustained pressure to halt the chase. Despite a determined effort from the lower order, Eton were eventually bowled out for 245, securing an impressive victory for Tonbridge.
Master in Charge of Cricket, Rob Stephen summarised the weekend’s play, “In the club’s first full block of the season there were, as ever, a number of highly exciting games, ranging from a record-breaking opening stand in the 1st XI to an epic (and ultimately successful) chase by the U14Es against Eton’s F team. The Tonbridge juniors will have learned a lot about playing longer formats of cricket, whilst it was heartening to see the Colts A and 2nd and 3rd XIs record strong wins even amidst the busy exam season.”
