An outstanding Annual Shakespeare performance evening
Each Lent Term, Novi English students are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in Shakespearean plays, rehearsing scenes and engaging in character discussions whilst exploring the historical and cultural context of the work.
This culminates in the boys’ performing extracts by candlelight in Old Big School – an annual tradition which began several years ago to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, continued by this year’s Novi, who enacted scenes from ‘Henry V’.
The flickering light from the candelabras was further enriched by musical performances from Novi and Second Year music scholars, evoking the experience of Shakespeare’s original audiences.
Emma Dawes, Graduate Teacher and Director, said ” This year, over eighty Novi took part in bringing an abridged Henry V to life. Their individually devised scenes were enchanted by a candlelit stage and accompaniment from Leo Wash’s string quartet, leaving the audience immersed in the cosy magic of the early modern playhouse.”
