Allan Bunney Concert: The Great American Songbook
The latest in the Allan Bunney Concert series took place on Friday evening. It featured music from some of the 20th century’s most enduring American popular songs and jazz standards, fondly referred to as The Great American Songbook.
The programme featured music written for Broadway, Hollywood movie musicals and tracks made famous by Frank Sinatra and other artists. Performers ranged from the Novi to the Lower Sixth, in addition to OTs and current members of the Common Room. Highlights included an assured performance of Fly Me to the Moon (Howard) by Kanyechi (Sc1), contrasted with the characterful portrayal of Billy Bigelow, from Carousel, by Tom Metcalf (WH 2020-25), in addition to the sensitive emotional resonance from Nick Samuel (WH 2018-23), Michael Pelmore (WH 2007-12) and Michael Bascom (OH 2005-10).
Rob Stephen, Assistant Housemaster at Hillside, teacher of Classics and Master in Charge of Cricket impressed with Sinatra’s My Way, and fittingly Jon Woodrow, teacher of DT, who will retire at the end of this term, closed the concert to rapturous applause.
