The Tonbridge Debate Union ‘a home of passionate discussion’

The Tonbridge Debate Union is the School’s home of passionate discussion, persuasive argument, and intellectual growth. Inspired by the historic Tonbridge debating society of the 1940s, whose original record book we rediscovered in the archives, we are reviving the tradition of Union Debate at the School.

Debates between pupils and staff have returned, marking a new era of critical thinking at Tonbridge. A recent highlight has been a thoughtful motion entitled: ‘This house believes that justice is more morally urgent than peace ’. The debate prompted searching reflections on the nature of war, peace and justice throughout history, delivered by a high-calibre line-up of students and teachers.

This June, we held an event titled: ‘This House Believes That Art Should Be Viewed Separately from the Artist.’ Can we admire a masterpiece while condemning its creator? Should an artist’s moral character shape the way we experience their work?

The debate explored the enduring questions about creativity, ethics and the purpose of art, with examples ranging from classical literature to contemporary culture.

Looking forward to our upcoming debates, we will be discussing the nature of art and the place of religion in schools.

Debating is open to all students who are curious, thoughtful, and willing to explore big questions.
