Tonbridge student takes second place globally at International Economics Olympiad

Mathew (FH5) has achieved international recognition after securing a gold medal and second place individually in the International Economics Olympiad in Greece this summer which followed the inaugural national competition – Economics Olympiad UK 2025/26, organised by Time2Resources.

The competition attracted significant participation worldwide, with160,000 students from 5,570 schools across 63 countries taking part. Only 147 students progressed to the final, placing the five members of Team UK, including Matthew, among the top 0.09% of participants globally.

Overall, Team UK achieved a bronze medal in the national delegation standings, marking a successful conclusion to the UK’s first year of participation.

Matthew said, “Placing second globally was an incredible feeling, but what I found most meaningful about the Olympiad was the opportunity to meet and connect with students from all around the world who shared the same interest in economics. Discussing ideas, learning from one another and forming friendships across so many different countries made the experience particularly memorable.”

Matthew’s teacher, Sam Cleary, said, “Matthew has challenged himself all year to learn way beyond the Economics A Level syllabus. It is that thirst for new theories, information and real-world application that has led to him deservedly achieving this phenomenal accolade.”

Congratulations to Matthew on this amazing achievement!
