Bertie progresses to English Schools Athletics Championships

Bertie (WH2) has continued to make strong progress in Junior Javelin this season, culminating in a fourth-place finish at the English Schools Athletics Championships at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on 11 July.

His season began at the Kent Schools Championships, where he won the Under-15 Javelin title by an 18-metre margin and recorded a personal best of 48.41 metres. His victory earned him selection for the Kent team at the National Schools Championships.

Since then, Bertie has continued to improve, competing at the South Eastern Schools Inter-County Cunliffe Cup competition, where he set a further personal best of 50.14 metres, finishing just 11 centimetres behind the winner. His performances have also seen him progress towards his target of throwing beyond 55 metres.

At the English Schools Athletics Championships, Bertie competed against 13 of the leading junior throwers in the country and finished fourth with a throw of 49.98 metres.

For Bertie, this was his first experience of competing at the English Schools national level, representing a significant step up from the IAPS Championships. He handled the occasion well, securing fourth place and enjoying the opportunity to compete at this level.

Following the Championships, Bertie has continued to train over the summer, with a focus on developing his strength and refining his technique. He is now looking forward to putting this preparation to use during the rugby season, including at the Saracens trials, having progressed through to the second round.
