Croatia Yachting Expedition 2026

Since establishing the yachting pathway, Tonbridge has seen boys gain recognised qualifications, from Competent Crew through to, for the first time, RYA Coastal Skipper. Following previous expeditions along the south coast of England and across the North Sea to Norway, this year the programme headed to Croatia.

The expedition was open exclusively to the outgoing sailors, providing an opportunity to celebrate both their time on the yachting pathway and their wider achievements at Tonbridge. Under the guidance of skipper Craig, who has worked with the pupils throughout their time at the School, the boys took considerable responsibility for the organisation of the trip, from shopping and cooking rotas to route planning and maintaining records of water and fuel.

The original passage plan was soon adapted to make the most of the Croatian coastline, with regular opportunities to stop for swimming in the clear Mediterranean waters. A particular highlight was Kornati National Park, an archipelago of small islands where the group spent an evening moored among the islands. The boys prepared a barbecue on board, enjoyed a swim and watched the stars under clear skies.

A forecast of strong winds meant that the group shortened its stay in the national park and began the return journey. Sailing into a strong headwind provided an opportunity for the boys to put their skills into practice, with relatively few other boats choosing to sail in the conditions.

The final evening provided an opportunity to celebrate the boys’ achievements, both in sailing and academically, and to reflect on their time at Tonbridge as they prepared to move on to their next destinations.

The Croatia expedition provided a fitting conclusion to the boys’ time on the yachting pathway, combining sailing, teamwork, independence and time together as a year group. It was a rewarding week and a memorable way to mark the end of their time at Tonbridge.
