Field Day inspires exploration beyond the classroom
Field Day provided pupils with an opportunity to step beyond their usual academic routines and engage in a wide range of enriching experiences, with activities spanning the arts, sciences, outdoor education, leadership, sport and culture.
Across the School, pupils pursued personal interests, supported community programmes and participated in educational visits. Topics included mindfulness, art workshops, engineering and programming workshops.
Members of the Science Research Club visited the Royal Institution and the Royal Society, while Investors Club students explored the City of London and the Bank of England Museum. Pupils with interests in politics and philosophy visited the National Gallery, White Cube and Christie’s, while creative writers enjoyed a cultural day in the capital. Music scholars attended a lunchtime concert at Wigmore Hall, whilst members of The Tonbridgian editorial team gained insight into journalism and media.
Conservation groups took part in practical environmental work including apple picking, hedge laying and countryside management, while New Terriers completed orienteering challenges and outdoor activities. Boarding house groups enjoyed a variety of excursions, from countryside walks and National Trust visits to paddleboarding, golf and cultural tours.
The Combined Cadet Force also undertook a packed programme, with Army cadets participating in field exercises at Mereworth Woods, Navy cadets visiting Portsmouth Historic Dockyard or taking part in yachting and powerboating activities, and RAF cadets engaging in specialist aviation-themed experiences.
Elsewhere, pupils explored filmmaking, model-making, technical theatre, modern languages drama and sustainable design, meanwhile Formula 24+ participants combined engineering development work with team-building karting activities. Science for Schools members developed practical skills before delivering demonstrations to younger pupils, and Cowdrey Scholars gained a unique insight into the life of a professional athlete.
Field Day reflects Tonbridge’s commitment to providing an education that extends beyond academic achievement. By encouraging curiosity and personal growth, the programme enables pupils to discover new passion and develop valuable skills that will serve them well beyond their school years.
