Tonbridge is renowned for its sporting excellence, not just for producing international, county, and professional athletes, but also for fostering a lifelong passion for sport. This reputation has been established through a combination of an exceptional sport, health and fitness programme and an outstanding co-curricular sports offering.
The programme
In the first two years at Tonbridge, all boys take part in compulsory sport, health & fitness lessons designed to build a strong foundation in health, fitness, and well-being. Held at the Tonbridge School Centre – one of the top indoor sports facilities in the UK – these lessons aim to enhance understanding and engagement in physical activity.
The programme equips pupils with the skills to make informed lifestyle choices and supports their personal fitness and sporting goals. Covering topics like training methods, programme design, sports psychology, and goal setting, it provides a blend of theory and practice. Students undergo fitness testing, receive gym inductions, and learn to develop effective training regimes.
Health and well-being are at the core, with a focus on individual fitness plans, guided by personal fitness advisers. The curriculum also explores alternative training methods such as yoga, spin, and Pilates, and addresses key aspects of healthy living, including body image, nutrition, and the risks of supplements and performance-enhancing drugs. The lessons also cover fundamental movement skills, managing performance anxiety, and effective warm-up and cool-down routines, supporting the overall pastoral development of students.
