Living Our House system Ferox Hall

Ferox Hall

Ferox Hall opened as a boarding House in 1892 and is located on the High Street, directly opposite many of the School buildings.

Essential information

Housemaster: Chris Eades

Email: chris.eades@tonbridge-school.org

Phone: 01732 353032

Address: High Street, Tonbridge, TN9 1JX

House Colours: Orange, Yellow (Black)

Matron: Catherine Sharp

The oldest part of the Hall dates back to the 16th century, with additions built over the years. The entire house was extensively renovated in 2017 and is undergoing another exciting one over the summers of 2025 and 2026.

Ferox boys share dormitories in the first two years, with each boy also having an individual study to work in. From the Third Year upwards, the boys have single study bedrooms either within the newly built McNeil Building or the older part of the House, which also features the beautiful, panelled Housemaster’s study. Ferox benefits from an extensive garden, featuring a tennis court and a popular five-a-side pitch.

Old Ferocians include the renowned cricketer Colin Cowdrey, who is honoured with a blue plaque neat the main entrance.

About the Housemaster

Chris Eades studied History at the University of Southampton and was subsequently awarded a PGCE from the University of Bath and an MA in Education from the Institute of Education (UCL). He began his teaching career at King Edward’s School, Southampton where he taught History, was a Day Housemaster and Master in Charge of Cricket. After teaching History and Politics at Bradfield College, Chris taught for the five years prior to joining Tonbridge in 2019 at Harrow School, where alongside his History teaching and Assistant Housemaster’s role he has responsibility for the Cricket 1st XI. He has previously been part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme and has led World Challenge expeditions. He coaches both rugby and football teams here alongside cricket. He is married to Harri, a GP, and they have a son, Frederik and a daughter, Emmeline together with their dog Ted.

About the Matron

Catherine Sharp has worked at Ferox for more than a decade, becoming Matron in 2022 after working as Assistant Matron for several years. Catherine is always there to support and encourage the boys in their various activities throughout the week, from debates and drama productions to concerts and sports fixtures. The Ferox boys will find an ‘open door’ in Matron’s room where they can come for a chat, for help with sewing or just for crashing out on the sofa and watching a bit of television before dinner. Matron’s room is at the heart of the House in every sense.
