Living Our House system Manor House

Manor House

Founded in 1894, later than the other Victorian boarding Houses, The Manor House was renamed on the whim of its first Housemaster, J. A. Pott.

Essential information

Housemaster: Stefan Hargreaves

Email: stefan.hargreaves@tonbridge-school.org

Phone: 01732 502972

Address: Shipbourne Road, Tonbridge, TN10 3DP

House Colours: Dark Green and Red

Matron: Nicky Pye-Finch

Previously a well-established private home called Dry Hill House, the oldest parts of the building date back to the 18th century when its lands and estate dominated North Tonbridge. It was renamed The Manor House on the whim of its first Housemaster, J. A. Pott.

It is one of the closer Houses to the main School, and Manor boys can often be found playing on the Upper Hundred in the late afternoon and evening. First Year boys enjoy spacious six-person dormitories, studying in separate shared studies, and then move into single or double rooms in the Second Year. All boys in the Third Year and above have their own single study bedrooms. Manorians enjoy the largest games room in the School, as well as several other social and working spaces including their own Music Room with a baby grand piano.

Manor House old boys include the actor Dan Stevens and explorer Tim Severin: and from the world of rugby, Luke Wallace of Harlequins and James Short of Saracens and Exeter.

About the Housemaster

Stefan Hargreaves, previously Assistant Housemaster of Parkside and Teacher of Academic Music here at Tonbridge, studied Music at St Peter’s College, Oxford, where he was a Choral Scholar and gained a Double First-Class degree. He was subsequently awarded a PGCE in Music, and an MEd from Queens’ College, Cambridge.

Stefan started his teaching career at Tonbridge in 2010 and is now the CCF Contingent Commander. He is married to Kate, who is also a music teacher. They have three young children, Violet, Wilfred and Rupert, as well as two cats, Monty and Algy.

About the Matron

Nicky Pye-Finch joined Manor House in 2011. She is a much loved part of the House and her room is always full. Nicky has two labradors, Raphy & Albie who can be found relaxing on the beanbags with the boys. Nicky loves to support the House in sporting events and, on hot summer days, will always have an ice lolly in the freezer for the boys to enjoy when they return from games. Nicky is on speed dial for all the parents in Manor House and had given support, advice and wise counsel to generations of Manorians and their parents, evidenced by the number of WhatsApp groups she remains on.
