Living Our House system School House

School House

School House, Tonbridge’s original boarding House, was, for centuries, based at a central site on the School grounds.

Essential information

Housemaster: Kurt Seecharan

Email: kurt.seecharan@tonbridge-school.org

Phone: 01732 352180

Address: 53 London Road, Tonbridge, TN10 3AD

House Colours: Royal Blue and Black

Matron: Niki Butler

In 1990, the new School House was built on London Road, with a garden backing on to The Fifty (the 1st XV rugby pitch).

Boys in their first two years share four-person dormitories and have separate shared studies on the ground floor for academic work. All boys in the top three years benefit from spacious individual study bedrooms.

Famous old boys include the author Vikram Seth and the actors Benjamin Whitrow and David Tomlinson.

About the Housemaster

Kurt Seecharan, previously a Housemaster and Teacher of Politics and History at Trent College, attended Tonbridge himself as a boy and was Head of School. He studied Politics and Social Sciences at Bristol University where he also gained a PGCE in History and Games, as well as captaining the University 1st XV. Kurt’s teaching career has included Wellingborough School, where he was Master in Charge of Cricket; Bedford Modern School, where he was Head of Politics; Uppingham, where he was Head of Politics and a Housemaster for eight years; and the role of Assistant Head Pastoral at Mill Hill School. He is married to Katie, a Geography teacher. They have two children, Samuel and Alice.

About the Matron

Niki Butler joined School House as a Matron in 2017. She enjoys the buzz and energy that the boys bring to the House, and loves being amongst them as they relax playing the in-house piano and enjoying their free time together. She is a keen supporter of the boys, attending their performances, whether that be debating, musical or sporting activities. Her room is at the heart of the House and there is not much that goes on in School House which Niki is not aware of! Outside of work, Niki enjoys keeping fit, cooking and socialising.
