An emerging master plan

Tonbridge has just completed a development master plan with the architectural firm, ORMS. The aim of this plan is to map out improvements to the central part of the school. On the agenda: better facilities for English and Modern Foreign Languages; a new science centre, modernisation of the Library (to include provision of a resource centre); overall improvements to the flow of pupils and reception of visitors. An aim is also to create a more vibrant heart to the school.

A second rackets court

Last year we ran an appeal to fund a second rackets court (to be located in the Old Gym). Our target: £500K by Skinners’ Day 2010. With the incredible support of the Tonbridge (and worldwide) rackets fraternity, we made it. Construction work has started, with a completion likely by the end of Michaelmas Term 2011. The opening ceremony will take place in January 2012.

Support for the Marsh Academy

The Foundation Office has been providing fundraising advice and support for the Marsh Academy (sponsored by Tonbridge). Working in partnership with Marsh staff and members of the local community, we created a detailed bid for the creation of The Romney Centre, a pupil-inclusion and community centre. This grant bid has been successful, with Kent-based charity the Colyer Fergusson Trust very generously offering £3.6M to fund the construction of this innovative development.

Foundation Awards – five years on

The Foundation Office has published a review of the 5 year old Foundation Awards scheme. The review is for the benefit of the 600+ individuals who have already supported the education of Foundationers, but we are happy to send copies to those who request them. Alternatively, you can view the document here.

Where there's a will

The Foundation Office recently released a short video setting out the case for including Tonbridge in a will. We have used home-grown talent, both in terms of technical know-how and front-of-camera style. Emma Sim and David Love, from the Media Centre, provided the technical expertise and we recruited Howard Horner (JH 2005-10) as our presenter. The finished product is be viewable on the legacy page of this site and also available as a DVD.

Coming up

We will shortly be launching an appeal for a Steinway piano for the Music Department.  The project would be the beginning of a long term strategy which would lead to Tonbridge being a “Steinway School”. This would obviously help us attract the best music students.
