Lower Sixth Seminar: The political and financial undertones of football shirt sponsorship
The Seminar programme aims to develop and deepen an interest and understanding in philosophical, political, ethical, scientific, academic and cultural issues that lie beyond the traditional curriculum and the usual life experiences of Tonbridgians, with a range of internal and external speakers.
The first Lower VI Seminar of the new academic year was given by Joey D’Urso, a political journalist and data analyst for The Times, whose professional expertise, combined with his passion for football, led him to explore how football shirts reflect political and financial undertones across the globe. This was a fascinating examination of international power, influence and corruption, told through the lens of the beautiful game.
Oscar (OH4) said of Joey’s talk, “I thought that his seminar was fascinating, particularly as a football fan, and it has definitely altered how I think about football kits. I have just started reading his book and now I don’t think I will ever look at shirt sponsors the same way!”
We look forward to welcoming British explorer, paleoanthropologist and writer, Ella Al-Shamahi and British military historian, Saul David, in the upcoming seminars later this term.
