Chapel Choir sang Evensong with Benenden School
The Chapel Choirs of Tonbridge and Benenden came together to sing Evensong, performing an uplifting selection of choral music and hymns. The programme included Haydn’s anthem Insanae et vanae curae and Herbert Howells’ Magnificat, written for Gloucester Cathedral. Remarkably, all the music was entirely new to the seventy-five singers across both choirs, learned specially for this occasion.
Choirmaster, Julian Thomas, said:
It was wonderful for us to be able to join forces with the Benenden girls and to be part of such a large choir. It gave our boys the opportunity to sing with a different top line from our usual boy choristers, and also to work on one of the pieces with Benenden’s conductor, Edward Whiting. Although we regularly sing Evensong on Sundays throughout the year, each one is different, and the experience that our young singers gain at this stage is a real springboard to singing in choirs later in life, both at university and beyond.
