Sixth Formers give an Organ Recital at the Temple Church
Two of our Sixth Form boys, Sebastian (MH5) and Ben (Sc4), were invited to give an organ recital as part of the weekly lunchtime series at the prestigious Temple Church in London. They performed a programme of Romantic and 20th-century organ music by Karg-Elert, Mendelssohn, Messiaen, Thalben-Ball and Duruflé on the fine Harrison & Harrison organ in the church. Although similar in size to the Marcussen organ in Tonbridge Chapel, the boys had only a few hours on the morning of the recital to adapt to a very different kind of instrument from the English Romantic style.
Their organ teacher, Julian Thomas, was delighted with the boys’ work and was among the warmly appreciative audience in the church. He commented:
“It was lovely to hear the boys playing in such a different building from our own Chapel, and they undoubtedly learned a lot from the opportunity to play an organ of this style.”
The concert, which was livestreamed on the church’s YouTube channel, is available to listen to for the next week:
