Inspiring ‘learning journeys’: Tonbridge hosts launch of Wells Language Hub

Tonbridge hosted the launch of the Wells Language Hub on Friday 15 March.

A partnership which brings together a number of schools in Kent, the Hub’s mission is to promote the benefits – educational, social and economic – to young people of learning a language.

The event, staged at the EM Forster Theatre, had as its theme ‘Where will languages take you?’ and was attended by students and staff from the partner schools.

Speakers included Gaby Hernandez, Assistant Principal, The Skinners’ Kent Academy, and Donna Kane, Head of Languages, Dartford Grammar School, who are among the Hub’s specialist teachers, and Hannah Knowles, Principal, The Skinners’ Kent Academy.

Will Law, Tonbridge’s Head of Modern Languages, said: “We were delighted to host this event, which celebrated the importance of learning languages and inter-cultural understanding.

“The talks provided food for thought for gifted and talented linguists from across the county, and we hope that many of them will feel inspired and empowered to continue on their language learning journeys.”

Danilo McGarry, ranked among the world’s top 20 AI experts, and recognised by The Times and other publications as a thought leader in this field, spoke on the topic of technology.

Other talks were given by Michelle Howard, a lead Government relations and strategic policy advisor in the defence and space sectors; Nigel Howard, a defence and national security expert; Adriana Hunter, an award-winning translator; and Duncan Lowe, an advisor to the Board of Campari Group.
