Chapel Choir sing in St Albans Cathedral

The school’s Chapel Choir sang Evensong yesterday (Monday 7 May) in St Albans Cathedral, deputising for the latter’s Cathedral Choir.

The music ranged from Herbert Howells’ ‘Collegium Regale’ setting of the Evening Canticles, and Charles Stanford’s mighty anthem ‘For lo, I raise up’, to the restrained simplicity of Walford Davies’ setting of Psalm 121, which afforded ten boys the opportunity to sing solos.

The event continued the Chapel Choir’s tradition of annual visits to sing in cathedrals.

Choirmaster Julian Thomas was delighted with the performance. “The boys sang superbly in a musically-demanding programme, delivering a confident sound but with real subtlety in places too,” he said.

“It was particularly pleasing to see the choir working so well together and really listening to each other in the different acoustic of St Albans. The Dean of the Cathedral was most effusive in his thanks and commented on the quality of the Chapel Choir’s sound.”
