Isaac and Alex to represent the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad
Two Tonbridge boys have been selected to represent the UK in the one of the world’s most prestigious Maths competitions.
Following their participation in a selection camp at the end of May, Isaac King (CH3) and Alex Chui (CH1) were chosen as members for the UK team taking part in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which is being staged in Oslo in July.
The School’s Head of Maths, James Ashton, said: “The UK team consists of the top six school-age mathematicians in the country, meaning that selection is a remarkable achievement and a great honour.
“This is only the second time in more than two decades that a school has had more than one member selected for the UK’s IMO team. A huge well done to both boys.”
The IMO, held annually, is the premier ‘World Championship’ Maths competition for senior school students. The first IMO, which took place in Romania in 1959, saw seven countries participating; it has since expanded to more than 100 countries across five continents.
There was further international recognition for Tonbridge when Hayden Lam (FH4) represented the UK in the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad, staged last month, and achieved an Honourable Mention.
The news of Isaac and Alex’s selection continues a run of tremendous success for Tonbridge’s Maths Department.
In the latest Trinity Maths Competition, an annual online contest involving 170 teams from six countries, one Tonbridge team came top in the UK and was placed 8th worldwide. A total of three School teams were placed in the top 30 worldwide.
Earlier this year, six Tonbridge boys earned the right to take part in the Second Round of the British Maths Olympiad, an extremely challenging national examination which features only the top 100 Maths students across the country. Isaac King and Alex Chui also achieved full marks in this contest, which meant they were awarded the joint top position in the country.
In 2021, two Tonbridge leavers, Sherman Yip and Victor Lin, gained places to read Maths at Trinity College, Cambridge, where the course is world renowned.
