Isaac and Alex earn silver medals in International Mathematical Olympiad
Two Tonbridge boys emerged with silver medals after representing the UK in one of the world’s most prestigious Maths competitions this summer.
Isaac King (CH4) and Alex Chui (CH2) took part in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Oslo in July. The UK team featured the top six school-age mathematicians in the country, meaning that simply participating in the IMO was a remarkable achievement by both boys.
It was only the second time in more than two decades that a school had more than one member selected for the UK team in this contest.
In gaining their silver medals, Isaac and Alex were placed among the top 150 school-aged mathematicians in the world.
The boys also helped the UK team to a final position of 13th in the international competition.
On Monday, 26 September, the pair were re-awarded their medals by Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, a renowned statistician and a Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge, at an IMO lecture and celebration in Westminster Central Hall.
They were joined by Hayden Lam (FH5), who represented the UK in the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad in May, where he achieved an Honourable Mention.
The School’s Head of Mathematics, James Ashton, said: “We are very proud of the boys’ extraordinary achievements, which are the result of a great deal of hard work at Tonbridge School and beyond.”
