Creating the products of tomorrow: Boys tackle Ledlenser design challenge
Tonbridge’s Lower Sixth boys have been meeting a product design challenge set by Ledlenser, one of the world’s leading LED lighting companies.
Their brief was to design and create a visual prototype of an innovative new lighting product – with the emphasis on identifying a gap in the market.
The students’ creations needed to reflect the vision, styling and quality associated with the brand.
Developed in partnership with the School’s Design Technology Department, the challenge saw the A-level students researching existing products and exploring new product opportunities including bicycle lights, festival lighting with in-built audio, pest control lighting and multi-functioning handheld lights.
During the judging process on Tuesday 8 November, each student was given a five-minute slot to make their design pitch, show their completed model and present their corporate vision.
Head of Department, Richard Day, said: “This was an exciting and challenging design brief. The judging panel, comprised of staff both from Ledlenser and Tonbridge, was hugely impressed at the range of sophisticated and creative solutions the students came up with.
“Some of the proposals clearly identified a gap in the market and have the potential to be developed into a successful commercial product.”
The top prize was awarded to Ryan Ng (FH4) for his bicycle lighting concept.
Owing to the quality and range of products produced, all students taking part were rewarded with prizes by Ledlenser.
