Honorary Academic Scholarships awarded to Sixth Formers in recognition of outstanding work

Lower and Upper Sixth boys have received Honorary Academic Scholarships from the School in recognition of their superb academic performances.

In ceremonies during the Michaelmas Term, boys were presented with their scholarship certificates by James Priory, the School’s Headmaster, and Mark Weatheritt, Deputy Head Academic.

The largest group, of more than 40 students, received Post GCSE Honorary Academic Scholarships, which recognises the achievement of those who did not previously hold awards but who performed outstandingly across the curriculum in their GCSE examinations in the summer.

Record results were achieved in Tonbridge’s 2023 GCSEs, with 48 per cent of all grades at 9, the highest possible score, and 94 per cent of grades at 9, 8 or 7, the equivalent of gaining either an A* or an A.

Honorary Academic Scholarships were also awarded to three boys from the Upper Sixth, who were not already scholars but who have excelled in their studies over the past year and achieved highly impressive results in Lower Sixth examinations; and to a group of five boys, new to Tonbridge, who performed outstandingly in their Sixth Form entrance assessments.

All new scholars will also be awarded prizes at an end-of-term Presentation Assembly.

Mr Priory offered the boys his warmest congratulations, adding that the conferment of an Honorary Academic Scholarship was a recognition from the School that each of them was setting impressive standards.

“There were many outstanding performances, by individuals and by the Third Year cohort as a whole, and it is important to reflect upon your fine achievements back in the summer,” he told the Post GCSE Honorary Academic Scholars.

Addressing all the new scholars, Mr Priory added: “As academic leaders of the School, I look forward to seeing you involving yourselves fully in the super-curricular programme and encouraging others, especially boys in younger years, to enjoy developing their intellectual pursuits too.”
