An outstanding Annual Shakespeare performance evening
Each Lent Term, Novi English students are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in Shakespearean plays, rehearsing scenes and engaging in character discussions whilst exploring the historical and cultural context of the work.
This culminates in the boys performing extracts by candlelight in Old Big School – an annual tradition which began several years ago to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, continued by this year’s Novi who enacted scenes from ‘Henry V’.
The flickering light from the candelabras was further enriched by musical performances from Novi and Second Year music scholars, evoking the experience of Shakespeare’s original audiences.
Teacher of English and Mathematics, John Shafer, said, “Parents praised the boys’ performances afterwards, and staff members who have seen several previous Novi Shakespeare evenings rated this one among the very best. We are all most proud of the boys for their commitment and talent.”
