Design Technology & Engineering Supercar Trip – Bologna, Italy
During the half term, students from Year 9 through to the Upper Sixth took part in an immersive Design Technology & Engineering (DTE) trip to Bologna, Italy. All participants shared a keen interest in automotive design and engineering, and the trip offered a unique opportunity to explore the heart of Italy’s supercar industry through factory visits, masterclasses, and cultural experiences.
The adventure began with a flight to Pisa, where students visited the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa before travelling on to Bologna to check into their hotel.
The following day, the group visited Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello. Students toured the factory and took part in a Ferrari Innovation Masterclass, gaining valuable insight into the brand’s approach to design, performance, and sustainability. The day continued with a guided walking tour of Bologna, allowing students to experience the city’s rich history and architecture before enjoying another authentic Italian dinner.
Next on the itinerary was a visit to the Lamborghini factory, where students observed the production line for the new Urus SUV – a fascinating insight into modern hybrid automotive manufacturing. This was followed by a trip to Pagani, where the group admired a range of limited-edition hypercars, appreciating the craftsmanship and bespoke engineering that define the brand. The day concluded with a high-energy laser tag session, where both students and staff demonstrated impressive competitive spirit.
The final day included a visit to Ducati, where students learned about motorcycle engineering, precision manufacturing, and the different scales of production. Later, they toured a gelato factory, taking part in a fun and lively competition to create the best gelato – a challenge that was well received.
Head of DTE, Richard Day, said:
Throughout the trip, students engaged with industry professionals, explored cutting-edge technologies, and discovered the passion and precision behind some of the world’s most iconic vehicles. The combination of educational enrichment, cultural exploration, and hands-on activities made this a truly exceptional experience for everyone involved. The DTE department looks forward to running the trip again in the future.
