Climate Change Conference inspires pupils
Tonbridge welcomed four local schools and more than 30 participants to its Climate Conference, led by Green Committee member Matthew (FH4). The conference was designed to simulate the way countries debate and make decisions at the United Nations.
Prior to the debate, each participant prepared an opening speech outlining the country they were representing and whether they supported or opposed the proposed sanctions.
During the conference, students were encouraged to contribute actively by presenting their country’s views, asking questions, responding to others and collaborating to develop practical solutions. The exercise provided an engaging and realistic insight into international diplomacy and the challenges of reaching global agreements.
Matthew, said “I thoroughly enjoyed helping to create a meaningful platform for students from multiple schools, including our own, to come together and engage with one another both personally and academically. It was especially rewarding to introduce students to the Model United Nations format, where they could step into the perspectives of others and develop important critical thinking and discussion skills. Another particularly meaningful aspect of the experience was collaborating with my peers to organise the event.”
