The Tonbridge Science Technician Convention 2025
The third annual Science Technician Convention saw an impressive turnout, with 140 science technicians from 70 schools in attendance, reinforcing the convention’s reputation as a professional development opportunity for those supporting and delivering STEM education.
Delegates were invited to select four workshops from nineteen options developed by leading organisations, including The Royal Society of Chemistry, Physics Partners, The Royal Microscopical Society, SAPS, as well as our expert educators – Bill Burnett, Chris Lawrence, and Ralph Fleming. The workshops covered topics from organic chemistry and microbiology to physics demonstrations in electricity and magnetism. Attendees explored practical applications, including gingerbread DNA models, microbiology lab techniques, and sustainability initiatives, enhancing their skill sets and creativity.
A keynote address was entitled, “How to Be a Higher-Profile Technician”, delivered by science trainer, consultant and comedian, Dr Steve Cross, titled, in which he shared entertaining insights and practical tips to help technicians raise their professional profiles, engage with the public, and create impactful STEM outreach. Beyond the keynote, the convention hosted exhibitor stalls featuring cutting-edge scientific equipment, resources, and networking opportunities.
Exhibitors included Physics Partners, the Royal Microscopical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, CLEAPSS, and industry leaders such as Cambridge Glassblowing, Clifton Nickel-Electro, and Data Harvest, among others. Delegates had the chance to explore innovative products and establish valuable industry connections.
