Outstanding results for Tonbridge students in British Maths Olympiad
Tonbridge boys have excelled once more in the First Round of the British Mathematical Olympiad.
This competition, which is open to the top 1,000 school mathematicians across the UK, requires competitors to solve six challenging questions in three-and-a-half hours. The top 100 entrants at this stage are then invited to take part in the next round, which sets them an even more challenging examination.
The School had its best-ever results, with 12 boys gaining distinctions and seven earning a coveted place in the Second Round.
Four boys were placed in the top 27 in the UK. Isaac King (CH4) scored full marks (60/60), while Alex Chui (CH2) scored 59/60, Hayden Lam (FH5) 51/60 and Catalin Botezat (Sc5) 50/60.
Third Years Sam Zang (FH3) and Ralph Edmondson (OH3) also performed extremely well, scoring 39/60 and 35/60 respectively – the School’s next two highest scores.
Justin Leung (JH2) scored an impressive 31/60 and Yijun Wang (PH1) scored 21/60 – the highest in the Novi.
The British Maths Olympiad is run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust and is open to students from all schools and colleges in the country. Round One took place in November 2022, with the Second Round scheduled for 25 January.
Following outstanding results in last year’s competition, Isaac and Alex were chosen to represent the UK at the 2022 International Maths Olympiad.
James Ashton, Tonbridge’s Head of Mathematics, said: “These are excellent results and I look forward to seeing how the boys get on in the Second Round. The School’s strong track record in Maths Olympiads and other competitions in recent years is a tribute to the immense strength of the Maths Department as a whole, making these exciting times for our students and teachers alike.”
