Lower School Concert showcases talents of more than a hundred young musicians

More than 100 boys performed in Tonbridge’s latest Lower School Concert on Friday 1 December.

The School Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Junior Strings and Concert Band all featured in a varied and entertaining programme, which complemented the French theme of the School’s Autumn Concert Series.

Performances included pieces from Bizet, Berliot, Fauré, Delibes and Milhaud, as well as Bartók and Alan Silvestri.

Of particular note was original music composed by Tony Maloney, one of the School’s Percussion teachers: boys performed Betty’s Jig from Hullabaloo.

Parents, staff, family and friends attended the concert, held in the School Chapel, as did all Tonbridge’s First Years.

Mark Forkgen, the School’s Director of Music, praised the talent and versatility on show. “This event gave many of our boys who are not specialist musicians the opportunity to experience the thrill of taking part in a School concert,” he said.

“I was impressed with the commitment on display. The programme featured lots of challenging music and they carried it off with great aplomb. The School Orchestra was superb.”

A Piano and Chamber Music Concert takes place on Friday 8 December (Recital Room, 7.30pm), which concludes the School’s Autumn Concert series. Tickets are free: please book in advance.
