Jonathan Smith Personal Essay Prize Celebrates Exceptional Storytelling

Tonbridge School is delighted to announce the winners of the Jonathan Smith Personal Essay Prize 2024, a competition that celebrates originality, intellectual exploration, and the art of storytelling.

The Prize, now in its second year, is named in honour of former Head of English and acclaimed novelist and playwright Jonathan Smith. The competition challenges boys to explore their experiences and ideas through literature, offering a single-word prompt each year as a creative springboard. The 2024 theme, “Story-telling,” inspired a wide array of submissions across three categories: Novi, Intermediate, and Senior.

Head of English and competition adjudicator, Nick Waywell, said: “The Jonathan Smith Personal Essay Prize provides a unique platform for our boys to engage deeply with literature and their personal experiences. The finalists’ essays were truly exceptional, and it is inspiring to see them rise to this challenge with such thoughtfulness and creativity.”

Evan (Sc1) was awarded the top prize in the Novi category. His essay stood out for its heartfelt exploration of storytelling through the lens of his childhood fascination with The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Reflecting on the role of stories in shaping identity and understanding, Evan skilfully blended personal experiences‚ including his journey as a Chinese speaker adapting to life in the UK – with broader reflections on what makes a story.

Daniel (MH2) was awarded the top prize in the Intermediate category. His¬†essay traced storytelling back to its prehistoric origins, highlighting the evolutionary importance of narrative. Drawing on neuroscience and literature, he demonstrated how stories have always been vital for communication and survival. Judges were impressed by Daniel’s fluency and intellectual rigor, as well as his ability to weave in diverse references, from Chinua Achebe to cave paintings. His closing call to “tell your own story” left a lasting impression.

Ben (OH5) as awarded the top prize in the Senior category. His essay provided a philosophical perspective on storytelling as a reflection of life itself. Inspired by art, religion, and performance, he examined the performative nature of existence and the quest for authenticity within human narratives. Judges commended Ben for his intellectual ambition and his ability to connect deeply personal reflections with universal themes, supported by references to works by Bill Viola, Marina Abramovic, and others.

The winners were honoured during a celebration on 6 December 2024, and will subsequently be published in The Tonbridgian, with prize winners receiving an English Society tie and a book prize in recognition of their outstanding work.

Headmaster James Priory commended their achievements: “These winning essays highlight the power of storytelling to connect us to ourselves and to the world around us. It’s brilliant to see the boys combining personal reflection with literary insight inspired by the example of Jonathan Smith’s own work.”
