Head of School Interviews Sir Bob Neill KC on Law, Politics, and Public Service
Students at Tonbridge had the opportunity to hear from Sir Bob Neill KC, a distinguished barrister and former MP, as he shared insights from his career in law and politics. Interviewed by the Head of School, Ethan Glucina, Sir Bob spoke candidly about his journey – from studying law at the London School of Economics to serving in Parliament for nearly two decades.
A successful criminal law barrister before entering politics, Sir Bob was the Conservative MP for Bromley and Chislehurst from 2006 until his retirement in 2024. During his time in office, he held ministerial roles at the Department for Communities and Local Government and later chaired Parliament’s Justice Select Committee. A strong advocate for legal aid and a respected voice on justice policy, he also served on the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and was known for his pro-European stance.
The event, hosted by the Law Society, attracted students considering careers in law, politics, and the Civil Service. They engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on legal reforms, parliamentary decision-making, and the challenges facing the justice system today. Sir Bob’s reflections on leadership, public service, and the evolving landscape of British law provided valuable perspective for those looking to pursue similar paths.
Ethan Glucina, who led the conversation, said: “It was great to see the engagement from boys across the year groups, asking questions and listening enthusiastically. It was a pleasure to interview Sir Bob, and I thank him for generously offering his time!”
Ruth Davis, Head of the Law Society, added: “Hearing directly from someone who has worked at the highest levels of both law and politics was a fantastic opportunity. Sir Bob gave us a real sense of what it takes to succeed in these fields, and it was clear to see the boys gained a lot from the experience.”
The event was part of Tonbridge’s ongoing programme of speaker engagements, giving students direct access to leading figures across a range of professions.
