Insights from explorer Ella Al-Shamahi
The School warmly welcomed back archaeologist and paleoanthropologist, Ella Al-Shamahi as part of the Lower Sixth seminar programme.
Drawing on her BBC series ‘Human’, Ella’s talk explored the origins of Homo sapiens and other human species, offering fascinating insights into what makes us who we are.
Reflecting on the talk, Matthew (FH4) wrote:
I was struck by her ability to integrate scientific insight, humour and personal reflection in the same talk, particularly when she described her own experiences and career path, which led her to study palaeoanthropology and becoming a television presenter.
The concept of tribalism was especially fascinating. It represents a double-edged sword: while tribalism can foster division, as we see in modern society, it also played a crucial role in the survival of early Homo sapiens groups, ultimately enabling humanity to develop into what it is today.
Ella’s career advice was equally inspiring, as she emphasised the importance of networking and reassured us that pursuing interdisciplinary interests and taking unconventional paths is possible, as demonstrated by her own experiences. She also spoke candidly about the challenges of working across different fields such as science and comedy, while encouraging us to follow our passions and remain open to new opportunities.
We thank Ella for her time and for undoubtedly inspiring many of those in our Upper Sixth cohort to pursue their vast array of passions and interests.
