Field Day brings learning to life beyond the classroom
Field Day provides pupils with an opportunity to step beyond their usual academic routines and engage in a diverse programme of enriching experiences.
One of the largest initiatives of the day was led by Tonbridge Community Action (TCA), which welcomed 140 learners from The Oaks Specialist College for a day of shared activities. The occasion allowed TCA boys to develop their understanding of others who have a range of additional needs and abilities, while also hosting guests who were trying new activities in an unfamiliar environment. The varied programme included a selection of sports, art, drama, musical theatre, a science show, and a concert performance.
Juliet Burnett, Head of Community Action, said, “This Field Day gave the TCA boys a chance to share our fantastic site and facilities with friends from The Oaks, and to share in their excitement at the new activities on offer. It was a day of learning and laughter for all of us, as boys and guests alike grew in confidence, seeing beyond what makes us different and instead focussing on joint activities and experiences, all with a great sense of fun, and smiles all round as we shared ice creams at the end!”.
Elsewhere around the School, boys participated in a broad range of academic and co-curricular pursuits. The Mathematics Department hosted board game sessions, while debating activities took place in Q2, encouraging pupils to develop their confidence in public speaking. The Music Department was alive with rehearsals and performances, and the Barton Science Centre welcomed visiting pupils as part of the Science for Schools programme.
Many boys also spent the day beyond the School grounds, taking part in specialist visits, competitions, and service opportunities. These included Army, Navy, RAF, and Terriers expeditions, the CANSAT team’s visit to Herstmonceux, Formula 24 activities at Buckmore Park, a Creative Writing trip to the British Library, and conservation work at Long Mead Community Primary School.
Many thanks to all the staff and volunteers who helped our boys gain such enriching experiences.
