Quick on the draw: Boys meet the ‘Sketchtober’ challenge

Boys had to draw on all their resources as the School’s Design, Technology and Engineering Department set them the task of completing a sketch every day throughout October.

Having been provided with a different theme for each day, the students were encouraged to use a range of different media and techniques as they strove to complete all 31 drawings.

Boys made use of traditional techniques such as pencil sketching, pen line work, marker renderings and perspective drawings, but also showed their ability to master state-of-the-art graphics programmes such as Adobe PhotoShop.

Richard Day, Head of Design, Technology and Engineering, said: “Producing the full set was quite an undertaking and an investment of time, and so I was hugely impressed that a good number of students completed the challenge.

“It was pleasing to see such a range of different styles and techniques being used. The outstanding quality of the work, and the creativity and commitment shown each and every day by those taking part, made judging ‘Sketchtober’ an enjoyable process, although selecting winners from such a talented field was far from easy.”

Some of the DTE staff also attempted the challenge, and students were encouraged to submit their drawings for judging even if they had not managed to complete the full set.

A variety of graphics and drawing equipment was awarded as prizes.

‘Sketchtober’: Results.

Upper Sixth winners: James Goh (MH5) and Karsten Mok (HS5)

Lower Sixth winner: James Watts (OH4)

Lower School winner: Abhay Menon (Sc2)

Highly commended: Kaiyang Dai (CH5), Ryan Cheung (PH4), Lifu Yang (JH2), Sam Healing (WW2).
