Teams aim for the trophy in D&T Challenge

Tonbridge boys had to be right on target in this year’s Design and Technology Inter-House Challenge.

Teams were set a brief to design and manufacture a device that could fire a projectile at a ‘shooting gallery’ constructed by the Department’s technicians. There were targets of various shapes and sizes, including a revolving one.

Judging took into account ingenuity, innovation and quality of build, as well as the total of targets hit using the squash ball provided. There was a buzz of excitement in the air as, after some time planning and constructing, boys put their launchers to the test and aimed to score as many points as possible.

After a hard-fought battle Ferox Hall (also last year’s victors) won the contest, with consistent shooting complementing their sturdy and refined machine. Hill Side and Oakeshott tied in second place, with Smythe not far behind in third.

Jon Woodrow, Design Technology Teacher, said: “The boys embraced this challenge and were very enthusiastic about firing projectiles! It was great to see the older boys mentoring the younger ones. We were also impressed at the array of solutions the boys found, and the ingenious use of the materials on offer.”
