Five golds and fine results in Senior Biology Olympiad

Tonbridge boys set a ‘gold standard’ with strong performances in the Senior Biology Olympiad, a rigorous examination for A-Level students.

Run by the Royal Society of Biology, the Olympiad covers a diverse range of topics and poses students challenging questions. Subjects range from human physiology, botany and genetics to enzyme kinetics and the functions of ecosystems.

Gold medals were awarded to five boys, who were placed in the top 7.2 per cent nationally – Jack Dalton (FH5), Luke Moore (WH5), Nishi Ranasinghe (OH5), Luke Streeter (FH5) and Felix Giles (HS5).

Receiving silver medals, and finishing in the top 15.4 per cent nationally, were Andrew Chiu (JH5), Jonty Corrin (WH5), Joe Hopkins (SH5), Calum MacKenzie (SH5), Sam Hudson (CH4) and Hal Pointon (WH4).

Bronze medals went to Barnes Darlington (MH4), Alex Piper (SH4), Sam Rawlins (WW4) and Jack Raynor (WW4). All four achieved a place in the top 30.3% nationally.

Hugh Grant, Tonbridge School’s Head of Biology, said: “To gain a medal in this contest is a significant achievement, and it is very pleasing that our boys have recorded such excellent results. Those in the Lower Sixth who received silver and bronze awards are also deserving of a special mention, since the paper is designed for Upper Sixth students. The boys were truly tested in terms of problem solving and subject knowledge, and came through with flying colours.”
