Maths Olympiad distinctions for Tonbridge

Tonbridge boys have excelled in a national test aimed at the top 1,000 Maths pupils across the country.

Those taking part in Round One of the British Maths Olympiad had to tackle six long and difficult questions. In results that were the best ever for the school, seven Tonbridge boys were awarded distinctions, achieving a place in the top quarter of all entrants. Five of these boys were also placed in the top 100, and will now go on to compete in Round Two.

Those taking part in the British Maths Olympiad had been the best performers in a previous competition, the Senior Mathematical Challenge. The latter is also organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust and is aimed at schools and colleges across the country.

The distinctions were awarded to Kiefer Chow (MH3), Ben Gardner (CH3), Godwyn Lai (MH4), Hayden Lam (FH1), Kevin Lee (MH4), Andrew Ng (PS5) and Sherman Yip (HS3).

Andrew Ng’s result put him in the top 15 in the country. Andrew was also invited to join a squad of 20 at a ‘training camp’ in Hungary, from which a team will be chosen to represent the UK at the International Olympiad later this year.

Schools and colleges across the country take part in the competition.

Tonbridge chalked up its best ever results in last year’s Senior Mathematical Challenge, receiving 40 Gold, 45 Silver and 16 Bronze awards.
